OBOKE at Winstons
As the weekend winds to a close and office warriors ready themselves for another workweek, it is only the party people of the highest caliber that are left still standing. The hard-core Sunday saloon-enthusiasts, many of them service-industry workers, the bravest and boldest of nocturnal fun-seekers, try to extend the weekend's worth to the last last call. There is a special place for such bar-folk, a place where they can have the spotlight, where others serve them, where they are the stars. There is a place for music lovers who need one day to try their own hand at performance, or at least would like to laugh at their buddy's attempts to sing.

Every Sunday night at Winston's Beach Club from 9pm to close the one and only Jose Sinatra hosts "OB-oke" (pronounced: "Oh-Bee-Oh-Key"), that's Karaoke, O.B. style! Unique to Ocean Beach, San Diego, OB-oke is a night of musical mayhem when all wanna-be rock-stars take the stage to belt out a few ditties and enjoy some cold beverages. Winston's powerful P.A. system and top-notch sound-man (or as Jose calls him, "the lovely orchestral conductor"), Scott Munson, helps makes singers of all talent-levels sound their best; Winston's full stage, lights, disco ball, and fog machine help to create a sonic spectacle of seismic proportions. At the center of this swirling maelstrom of stunning stimuli is the ringleader and host, the illustrious Jose Sinatra. Known from his stylings as frontman in his band, "Jose Sinatra and the Troy Dante Inferno," OB-oke's director of rock-opera-ations is a dynamic and demented stage presence whose wit and humor is only equaled by the size of the sock stuffed in his crotch. (At least I think it's a sock.) Jose's theatrical performances of re-written songs and insane originals (such as the OB-oke theme song) make Sunday nights at Winston's exceptional entertainment that is not to be missed.

Free cover and two-dollar drinks have helped OB-oke become the hottest thing since Neil Diamond; singers bring their own discs, or choose from an extensive library of in-house songs featuring a wide variety of musical genres. Some of San Diego's finest local singers make frequent cameos on Winston's stage, but singers of all ability levels are encouraged to try their chops and become a rock-star one day of the week. For amateur singin' and professional drinkin' come into Winston's on Sunday nights and enjoy the exhilarating experience of OB-oke!
